Gain an understanding of safe working deck hand practices with the MCA approved Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) short course. Areas covered include seamanship, cargo work, pilot ladders and means of access, shipboard organisation and other associated topics. Assessment will be carried out via direct observation and oral questioning.

Important course information:

In order to comply with STCW Maritime and Coastguard Agency regulations, all delegates attending Merchant Navy courses must provide a seaman’s discharge book, passport or driving licence when attending the centre. Failure to comply with this requirement will lead to a delay in the issue of your certificate.

Validity of certificate: :There is no expiry date on this certificate.

Entry Requirements

The requirements for EDH have been amended to allow a more flexible approach for the yacht, workboat and fishing industries. The following certification and experience will permit entry to the EDH course and associated examination:

  • MCA accepted Yachtmaster offshore certificate and shore-based course
  • Yacht Rating with at least 6 months’ sea service and a steering certificate or NWR certificate
  • Fishing Class 2 CoC or the Seafish 5-day Watch-keeping course for under 16.5m fishing certificates
  • BML Tier 1 level 2 certificate
  • Tug rating with at least 6 months’ sea time (which may be in categorised water) and a steering certificate or NWR certificate
  • Being at least 17 years old

Please note: before an EDH certificate can be issued, a minimum of 6 months’ sea service in vessels greater than 15m is required. Sea service in category C and D waters will be accepted at full rate.

Career Options and Progression

Completion of the MCA approved Efficient Deck Hand course is required to apply to become a Certificate of Competency Able Seafarer, or Deck or Engine Officer of the Watch. It may also be required for the position you hold on board the vessel.
